This is the first story in a trilogy that attempts to describe life among small village tribes that were living on the islands making up the land bridge between what we now call Russia, and North America. Life at that time seems to evoke a set of skills that rival the best contestants on "Survivor." It certainly shows how far we've come in this modern world from being in touch with nature and knowing how to live off the land. Then, nothing in nature went to waste, and usually served more than one purpose. Original recycling due to survival.
Besides life being very challenging, we find that people are still the same. There are the smart and stupid ones, the kind and cruel ones, the ones who add to the success of their village and the ones who mooch off the more productive members of their tribe. So, what else is new?
We have the story of a young woman who moves from girlhood to womanhood due to a horrific trajedy that befalls her people. She is the only one left alive from her village, along with her infant brother, and has to find a way to survive. Women didn't hunt then, and because they weren't as strong as the males, they were relegated to a secondary though vital role in their society. Their lives depend on the sea.
I found this a well researched reconstruction of native American ancestors, with an intriguing story line. It is written well, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
I recommend this book.

Mother Earth Father Sky Sue Harrison 9780380715923 Books Reviews

Sure Harrison wields a tale of a strong willed young woman struggling to overcome the misfortunes that life has dealt her. She must balance the things she has to do to survive and even flourish, against the customs she was brought up with. The daring chances that she sometimes takes to build a better life for her and those she loves.

This is a well researched story that blends the hard facts of life in the ice age with a compelling story.
I have read both of Sue Harrison's trilogies and enjoyed them very much. They are completely different from Jean Auel's books, altho in the same vein. Sue Harrison writes more about the people themselves, as opposed to giving elaborate descriptions of the terrain, flora and fauna and animals.
Read the first in the trilogy and couldn't wait to read the next two. Almost through the third and still as interesting as the first. Good characterization, setting and plot with the different clans struggling with nature and each other. Keeps the pages turning!
Well researched historical novel (as much as possible in the seventh millennial BC)...stone age life in the Aleutian Island. Every day life, tools, food, gathering, belief systems and how they influences life choices. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Aside from the intriguing story that made you want to keep reading, the author wove so much detailed description of the Aleut' s way of life. So much was learned about this ancient time how they made their tools, built their home, utilized every part of a sea animal, not just for food, but for clothing, sewing, making spear heads, and on and on. She relayed that information with complete clarity. I felt almost a part of their way of life. Native peoples lived in tune with nature, and we need to all take much more care of Nature and our Earth.
A real page turner! I LOVE THIS STORY! Hard to put down. Many books are hard for me to read. Often I can only read for short periods of time before getting sleepy and wanting a nap. NOT SO WITH THIS BOOK!!! I can read this (and it's mates) book for HOURS!

I can't wait to read it again. It has been many years since I read this story. I had a paperback copy many years ago, but sadly was lost when I lent it to a friend and they lost it. I am looking forward to re-reading this story along with the rest in this series! Sue Harrison has done a beautiful job bringing her story to life. I love this Native American tale.
Harrison's writing gives prehistory a voice and a face, feelings that even the earliest people share with people today. The very basics of life had value, and the joy and sorrow of simply living had meaning. Just as today, there was something in a person that made each one special. Some were joyful, others were cruel and made life difficult. The bravery of Chagall is remarkable and her spirit carries the story. Such a hard life, but still she was able to see beauty and goodness.
