The Asylum was a good story although I had a hard time keeping track of who the characters were and how they were connected/related. It's harder on a Kindle to go back and skim through to remind myself of who was who.

I LOVED this book! It was very well-written, and the author does a great job creating the mood of the Victorian Gothic suspense novel. Couldn't put it down and read it in almost one sitting. Entertaining and fun with mystery lurking right around the corner.
It was a little too long for my taste. I almost gave up on it until the last 1/4 when the suspense picked up. I enjoyed it, but not enough to give it more than three stars.
I didn't realize it was a man writing as a woman until the end of the book. That's how convincing it was. And I couldn't put it down.
Good storyline. Very gothic supernatural mystery. Well-done. Ably moves from past to present. You get involved with the lead character and caught up in whether she's actually crazy or she's been royally duped into being committed to an asylum. Why did she go there on her own? Why can't she remember who she is or why she's there? You're drawn into the story. I've already purchased another book from John Harwood based on how well developed this story is.
Firstly, don't be put off by the fact the story takes place in the mid 1800's. This is a book which is both easy and pleasing to read. The events in the story could happen, and if they did, and to me, what would I do differently? This author really spins a tale. With all the who, what, and where's, the reader should have a pencil and paper with them at all times, just to stay on track. Well written, definitely different, this is a "Can't put it down, page turner." I would definitely recommend this book for women to read...and I would love to meet the author, who has great imagination.
The story starts out well enough, but the "gothic" aspect was more 'confused damsel in distress' than anything else. I didn't like the pace and I definitely was not drawn into the "who is she?" part of the story enough to bother finishing it. Perhaps if I'd have stuck with it I would have felt differently, but if I'm not drawn in within the first 50 pages, I feel I am wasting my time. There are so many other excellent stories out there that give excellent intrigues along the lines of Iain Pears and Charles Palliser. I did try and really wanted to like it.
I expected a chilling ghost story, not a mystery. The Asylum reminded me of the book Children in the Attic where weird things are occurring and over time the explanation is revealed. This story would have been suspenseful and unsettling had I read it as a young teen. Having said all that, I do think John Harwood thoughtfully outlined the events in a cohesive manner which keeps the reader's attention.
The Asylum was a good story although I had a hard time keeping track of who the characters were and how they were connected/related. It's harder on a to go back and skim through to remind myself of who was who.
